Essential Leadership Skills for Project Managers

Essential Leadership Skills for Project Managers

Project management Business Case 512

In today’s complex business environment, a project manager’s responsibility goes well beyond managing the conventional deliverables and triple constraints. Managing engagements with numerous stakeholders and fulfilling change requests also adds to the complexity. The project manager has to navigate through a complex maze of organizational players and competing business priorities.

Altogether the project manager is dealing as much in personalities, perceptions and priorities as he/she is dealing with scope, time, costs and constraints. Consequently, the modern day project manager needs a comprehensive set of skills and competencies to succeed. PMI’s competency profile summarizes this skill set well in the Leadership dimension of the talent triangle.

We believe that the most successful project managers will be those who are good at managing relationships and at handling difficult situations in their day-to-day project management. With skills and experience in areas such as creative problem solving, conflict management, negotiations and the ability to influence others, a project manager can be an effective change manager and turn an average project team into a high performing unit.

PMINAC wants to provide its members and project professionals with training opportunities in these skill-sets. We are seeking interest from potential workshop facilitators, with practical experience, to offer a 1 day seminar/workshop aimed at imparting practical skills and hands-on training in areas of change management such as:

  • Relationship Building and Interpersonal Skills,
  • Conflict management,
  • Influencing stakeholders, and
  • Negotiations.

Ideally the workshop will utilize activity-based-learning framed in real life situations and will be targeted at intermediate to senior project managers working in northern Alberta.

The main learning objective of this one day workshop (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Edmonton, AB) will be to impart hands-on skills that will enable project management practitioners to manage business situations and people more effectively. The workshop is tentatively planned for the first week of December 2018.
